More Than 140 Pets VaccinatedÂ
On November 11, OHS board member Dr. Robert Mack was joined by two veterinarians and OHS vet techs to administer vaccinations for cats and dogs belonging to pet owners experiencing houselessness or housing transition in our community.
Three pop-up canopies were set up in the parking lot across from Blanchet House with each one staffed by a veterinarian and vet techs, plus all the supplies needed for a makeshift clinic. The canopies allowed pets and their owners privacy during their appointment. At the one-day clinic, the OHS medical team vaccinated 145 animals—81 dogs and 61 cats—who might otherwise not have had access to this type of care. 
“Getting access to rabies vaccinations and certificates is sometimes the one thing that keeps someone from securing housing or shelter, so it’s so important that we offer that,” says Dr. Mack.
The OHS medical team also offered nail trims if needed and quick wellness exams with referrals to low-cost animal hospitals, such as OHS’ Community Veterinary Hospital, for follow-up care. After getting vaccinated, pet owners could pick up any needed pet supplies like flea and tick medicine, pet food, leashes, raincoats, collars, and more—all provided for free thanks to OHS donors.
Services for Pets & PeopleÂ
Blanchet House of Hospitality has been working with people in our community since 1952—providing meals, clothes, and even housing support. In order to reduce barriers and bring more services to those in need with pets, Dr. Mack has established a routine partnership to provide veterinary care to pet owners in Blanchet House’s parking lot on a bi-annual basis.
The line for the event wrapped around the block with eager pet owners—many of whom had animals who had never been vaccinated and some with pets who have never seen a vet before. This was the case for sweet Obi-Wan who graciously accepted cheese treats and a handmade coat for being so brave during his first round of shots.
The vaccines at the event were provided by Zoetis, who have generously supplied vaccines at previous OHS events. Other supplies, including pet food, flea and tick medicine, leashes, and harnesses were available on-site thanks to support from OHS donors.
