Luckily, the small siblings found safe haven with Lila Obeng, Evidence Technician on OHS’ Humane Law Enforcement team, who stepped in to provide emergency foster care that helped keep the kittens alive during their most vulnerable hours.
Although Lila’s care helped stabilize them, the tiny trio needed continual care and attention—especially Stanley, the smallest and weakest of the bunch. Little Stanley was extremely underweight—just 10 ounces, with a tail smaller than a pinky finger. The kittens were placed in a permanent foster home with Emily, an experienced OHS foster volunteer.

In hopes of boosting his strength, Stanley was given antibiotics and an appetite stimulant, but unlike his siblings Stanley continued to struggle. Afraid that the tiny kitten wouldn’t make it through this fragile stage, Emily ensured every moment of Stanley’s little life was filled with love, comfort, and memorable experiences. She even took him out to her garden to smell the recently bloomed spring flowers.
At Stanley’s medical check-up, the OHS veterinarian team was concerned, but decided to try one last round of antibiotics—this time administered though IV. Stanley was kept onsite at OHS and Emily said her tearful goodbyes, unsure that she would see the sweet kitten with the bright blue eyes again.
But tiny Stanley wasn’t giving up, and neither was the OHS team. The course of antibiotics and the diligent care of OHS medical staff helped Stanley start to gain weight and gain strength.
A few days after bringing him in for treatment, Emily finally received the news she was hoping for—Stanley’s condition was improving, and he could return to her foster home for further healing. Although he remained tiny compared to his siblings, Stanley’s new playful personality was on full display. It was clear the resilient little kitten was finally feeling better.
Local Support During Kitten Season
April to September is kitten season, a busy time of year when shelters across the state see a rapid influx of stray cats and kittens. OHS helps support local shelters by transferring in felines from partner agencies to reduce overcrowding.
Each year during kitten season, OHS will provide care to 4,000+ cats and kittens.

An Unbreakable Bond
As a dedicated foster, Emily was passionate about helping animals along their healing journey but had resisted keeping any of them as her own. However, Stanley was special. His spunky personality had worked its magic—Emily knew that this tenacious kitty belonged with her. After a month caring for Stanley, Emily officially adopted him.

Determined to make the most of every precious moment they have together, Emily and Stanley spend their days exploring—Stanley safely by her side in a harness as they discover the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Now that he’s shown how much he enjoys hiking, the duo is planning a camping trip together in the near future.
