Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   What vehicles does OHS accept?
A:

The Autos for Animals program accepts cars, trucks, camper trailers, tractors, motorcycles, ATV’s, snowmobiles, RV’s, boats, jet skis, and even planes. The better the condition of the vehicle, the easier it is to sell it for a good price at auction and more money comes back to the shelter to care for the animals. If you have questions about a specific vehicle, please contact Marsha at (503) 416-7079/email.

Q:

How does Autos for Animals work?

A:

Most vehicles donated to OHS are sold at an open-to-the-public auction. A small percentage of the proceeds go to the auction vendor as a well-earned fee for towing the many donated vehicles to the auction, providing the auction services, and processing the DMV paperwork.

Q:   How do I notify the DMV?
A:

We recommend that you contact the DMV to let them know the vehicle was donated.

Q:   How do I claim the vehicle donation on my taxes?
A:

OHS will provide an acknowledgement letter that provides you proof of your donation. After the vehicle sells, a tax-receipt will be mailed to you. Vehicles sold for more than $500 will require the donor's social security number on a tax receipt in order to receive the full tax benefit. For additional guidance on vehicle donations visit www.irs.gov and see publication 4303.

Q:   How does the Oregon Humane Society obtain my vehicle?
A:

Once your information is received by our staff, our partner tow company will contact you to set up towing details. Please call 503-416-7079 or submit the online auto donation form to start the process.

Q:   Where do I sign on the car's title?
A:

You will need to sign the title before we can accept the vehicle. There are three to four versions of titles. One thing is for sure, DO NOT sign where it says, “ . . .security interest holder or lessor releasing all interest.” Where you DO want to sign is under “seller’s printed name” or “signature of owner releasing interest/certifying odometer reading”.

Example 1, Example 2

All parties listed on the title need to sign off on the title before OHS can accept the vehicle. The DMV is particular about signatures on titles and they don’t accept scribbled out names so please sign carefully.
