Frequently Asked Questions

Q:   What vehicles does OHS accept?
A:

The Autos for Animals program accepts cars, trucks, camper trailers, tractors, motorcycles, ATV’s, snowmobiles, RV’s, boats, jet skis, and even planes.

Running and non-running vehicles are happily accepted. Camper/travel trailers and boats are accepted based on condition. The better the condition of the vehicle, the easier it is to sell it for a good price at auction and more money comes back to the shelter to care for the animals. If you have questions about a specific vehicle, please contact Marsha at (503) 416-7079/email.

Q:

How does Autos for Animals work?

A:
  1. Call us or fill out the online form
  2. Our partner tow company will contact you to set up a pickup time.
They will pickup the title, consignment form, keys and vehicle.
  3. OHS will notify the DMV and send a donation acknowledgment to you.
  4. Auctions are held weekly.  Vehicles chosen for the consignment lot may
take a little longer to sell.
  5. Once the vehicle sells, an official tax receipt is mailed to you.

All vehicles donated to OHS are consigned to a licensed vehicle dealer.  From there it is determined whether the vehicle will sell best at an open-to-the-public auction or consignment lot.

A small percentage of the proceeds go to the dealer as a well-earned fee for towing the many donated vehicles, providing the auction services, and processing DMV paperwork.

Q:   How is the DMV notified?
A:

OHS will notify the DMW (Oregon/Washington) that your vehicle has been donated if complete VIN and Plate numbers are supplied. Once your vehicle has been sold, the Oregon DMV is notified who purchased the vehicle. We recommend that you contact the DMV to let them know the vehicle was donated if the vehicle in titled in a State other than Oregon or Washington.

If you are donating a boat, it is recommended that you contact the State Marine Board to notify them you have donated your vessel to OHS.

Q:   How do I claim the vehicle donation on my taxes?
A:

OHS will provide an acknowledgement letter that provides you proof of your donation. After the vehicle sells, a tax-receipt will be mailed to you. Vehicles sold for more than $500 will require the donor's social security number on a tax receipt in order to receive the full tax benefit. For additional guidance on vehicle donations visit www.irs.gov and see publication 4303.

Q:   Can I deliver my vehicle?
A:

Absolutly! Please feel welcome to deliver your vehicle to the shelter and visit the animals you are helping. Please call 503-416-7079 or submit the online auto donation form to start the process. We will have a donation acknowledgment waiting for you at the front lobby desk.

Q:   Where do I sign on the car's title?
A:

You will need to sign the title before we can accept the vehicle. There are three to four versions of titles. One thing is for sure, DO NOT sign where it says, “ . . .security interest holder or lessor releasing all interest.” Where you DO want to sign is under “seller’s printed name” or “signature of owner releasing interest/certifying odometer reading”.

Example 1, Example 2

All parties listed on the title need to sign off on the title before OHS can accept the vehicle. The DMV is particular about signatures on titles and they don’t accept scribbled out names so please sign carefully.
