Italian Greyhound Adoptions to Begin Jan. 8

The first group of Italian greyhounds relinquished to the Oregon Humane Society earlier this week from an overwhelmed breeder will be offered for adoption on Friday, Jan. 8. The dogs will be offered for adoption to the public on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning with the opening of the shelter at 10 am.

Relinquished Italian greyhound is examined by Dr. Kris Otteman, OHS director of shelter medicine.

OHS expects approximately 12 of the dogs to be ready for adoption Friday, ranging in age from nine months old to seniors. The dogs have been raised inside a single-family home for most of their lives, and will likely need help with leash training and house training. The dogs may need time to get accustomed to a new home and would benefit from owners who are familiar with the breed.

OHS will not allow holds to be placed on the Italian greyhounds. Potential adopters who already have a dog at home should consider bringing their dog with them to OHS for a pet meet.

More Information, Photos to Come

Photos and descriptions of the dogs available for adoption will be posted on the OHS website on Jan. 7.  OHS is not able to answer questions from the public about individual dogs over the phone or via email. Interested adopters should come to the shelter Friday morning to see the Italian greyhounds in person and talk with staff about the pets.

The dogs were voluntarily relinquished to OHS earlier this week by a breeder in Hillsboro. The breeder, a senior citizen, gave the dogs to OHS so they could receive any needed medical care and be placed in loving homes. Several of the dogs are scheduled to undergo dental surgery at OHS and will be offered for adoption after that surgery is completed. In addition, seven puppies and a mother dog are in the care of an OHS foster volunteer until the puppies are old enough to be adopted.

OHS is located at 1067 NE Columbia Blvd., Portland, Oregon. Find directions and hours here.

Update, Jan. 8; Adoptions of First Dogs

All of the Italian greyhounds available on Jan. 7 have been adopted to loving homes.

OHS expects additional greyhounds to become available for adoption one or two at a time from now on. There are no exact dates at this time, as their availability depends on veterinary care such as dental surgeries, spay/neuter, and the dogs’ individual recovery times. Please watch the OHS website and sign up for a Find Your Match email to be alerted when an IG becomes available. The interest in these dogs is so high that OHS expects each one to be adopted within hours of becoming available, so be sure to come visit right away.

Email signup: visit our website and go to the Dogs & Puppies page. Select ‘Show additional search options’ and select Italian Greyhound from the breed list. You’ll be prompted to sign up for email notifications on the search results page. When you are ready to cancel these notifications, click on the ‘cancel’ link within one of the emails you receive.

  3. I would love one of them. I live in MA and recently put down my 15+ year old IG. I want a tiny female to cuddle, walk, sleep, and so on. I would be willing to come pick her up.

  5. If I lived near by, Yesterday, the Italian Greyhound, and I would be picking out a brother or sister. I wish them all the best finding the perfect forever home.
