Italian Greyhounds Find Homes

Cadbury
The first Italian greyhound adopted was Cadbury, shown here with his happy adopter, Katie.

A crowd of nearly 40 Italian greyhound fans gathered at the front door of OHS the morning of Jan. 8, eager to get the first chance at adopting one of the dogs relinquished by a local breeder. By the end of the day, all eight Italian greyhounds offered for adoption had found loving homes. OHS discussed the unique needs of each dog with potential adopters to ensure the pets went to families well prepared to help the dogs thrive in their new environments.

The dogs were among 23 pets voluntarily relinquished to OHS earlier this week by a breeder in Hillsboro. The breeder, a senior citizen, gave the dogs to OHS so they could receive any needed medical care and be placed in loving homes. Several of the dogs are scheduled to undergo dental surgery at OHS and will be offered for adoption after that surgery is completed. In addition, seven puppies and a mother dog are in the care of an OHS foster volunteer until the puppies are old enough to be adopted.

Gatlin, one of the dogs adopted Jan. 8, is already making himself comfortable with his new family. His adopters told us that “When I brought him home, he ate a full meal and drank his water right away. He’s been a terrific eater, super playful, and extraordinarily loving. I’ve been training him and Ari [my other dog]  together …  After the two dogs spent some time together, virtually all forms of dominance/aggression have turned in a propensity for the cuddle zone … Gatlin has certainly found his forever home, and it’s a real delight to have him in the family.”

OHS expects additional greyhounds to become available for adoption one or two at a time from now on. There are no exact dates at this time, as their availability depends on veterinary care such as dental surgeries, spay/neuter, and individual recovery times. Please watch the OHS website and sign up for a Find Your Match email to be alerted when an Italian Greyhound becomes available. The interest in these dogs is so high that OHS expects each one to be adopted within hours of becoming available on the website.
