Pets with a Plan
Thanks to our Friends Forever® program, pet owners can have a solid plan in place for their pet’s future should the day ever come that they can no longer care for their beloved pets. The program ensures enrolled pets get a safe landing pad in our care while they await new homes. Enrolling pets into the program benefits not only the pets in question but also the many shelter animals who arrive in search of the same steadfast companionship—thanks to the qualifying estate and annual gifts made by pet owners as part of enrollment into the program. The gift is twofold—a secure future for pets and a generous legacy for animals in need.
Each year, we celebrate and honor the animals who arrived at our shelter as Friends Forever enrollees. Because of their owner’s forethought and love, they have another chapter in their stories. In 2025, ten much loved pets came into our care and found new families and new beginnings.

Mozart’s Story: A Symphony of Support
Tiny Mozart was just two years old when his owner came to the heartbreaking realization that she could no longer care for her cherished dog. His owner’s health was declining, and she knew that Mozart could use a patient, loving home that would shower him with the attention he deserved. Thanks to her forethought, Mozart had been enrolled into the Friends Forever® program, and there was a devoted place for him at Oregon Humane where he could get the care he needed to find a new home.
Still, even with a safe landing pad in place, Mozart arrived at Oregon Humane very nervous and shut down—alligator rolling, snapping, and avoiding staff and volunteers who tried to help him.
Every animal at Oregon Humane receives all the medical care, behavior support, healthy diets, care, and attention they need to thrive—and the path for our Friends Forever animals is no different.
Staff quickly enrolled Mozart into our Behavior Modification program to give him time to compose himself and decompress after his big transition while learning new skills that would help grow his confidence.
The Friends Forever program is instrumental in offering peace of mind to pet families. Not only is there a physical place for their pets to land, and a caring team to guide them, but there is also a robust infrastructure of care available at Oregon Humane that enables our team to go the distance for every animal in our care.
The time in the program worked wonders for Mozart. The symphony of support he received from staff and volunteers helped him tune into his playful, sweet side.
Once warmed up, Mozart turned out to be a playful puppy who loves to be in a lap or carried around. It wasn’t long before this note-worthy little pup found the right next home for him—finally fulfilling his previous owner’s wishes for a bright and vibrant future for her most trusted companion.
