Memory Wall
In observation of National Pet Memorial Day on Sept 13, 2026, Oregon Humane is honored to share these stories of our community members and their beloved pets. While submissions to the Memory Wall are officially closed, this space will remain open and viewable for the next year in loving tribute to the companions who will always be in our hearts.
Although new memories are not being added to this Wall, many opportunities still exist to honor a cherished petโs legacy. By making a tribute gift today, you will provide meaningful support to the vulnerable animals in our care. View more tribute options here.
Hawk
Born: 2011
Adopted: 2012
Passed: June 9, 2026
Iโll never forget pulling up to the Border Collie rescue in Alpine, San Diego. Dozens of rambunctious pups running around barking, except for one lil guy sitting patiently at the gate, wagging his tail. โYou must be who I came here for,โ I said.
Hawk wasnโt just my dog. He was everybodyโs dog. A coworker. A star in Bissell Vacuum commercials. A fantastic brother for Lambeau and Whiskey.
Hawk was there for every โadultโ decision I made: starting multiple businesses, meeting my wife, moving to Oregon, getting married, buying a house, having a child. He was in the center of it all.
On 6-9-2026, we had to say goodbye.
And while sad, we sent Hawkers to the Rainbow Bridge on one of his better days, surrounded by friends, eating hamburgers and pup cups, and getting more pets and love than Iโve ever seen a dog get.
Hawk loved music. Heโd fall asleep to the punk rock we played in San Diego or the softer songs Iโd write in Portland. In his last moments, I got to play Hawk a song in the soft grass he loved.
Everyone says their dog was the best. Hawk was. Because he was everybodyโs dog.
Naiya
Born: 2012
Passed: October 3, 2022
Naiya would slink on to our bed every morning and sit between my wife and I. She would very gently bend down and place her head on my chest. She would wait a few seconds, and then drop her entire 85 pounds on top of me. For 10 years I had the craziest alarm clock imaginable, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Our neighbours loved to see her on walks, because she always had a stick in her mouth, and no stick was too big. Sometimes the sticks were more like logs than sticks, but she made it work.
When she was 6 we added a puppy (Noomi) to the mix, and she was immediately in love. She was the perfect parent, and they were inseparable. As Noomi grew, they were the best of friends, and partners in crime.
When the end came, we only had a week to say goodbye, but she is always in our hearts.
Flynn
Passed: April 22, 2018
Flynn was a Papillon rescued from a puppy mill of over 200 dogs in Maine. I was part of a national Papillon rescue group which got 5 dogs. Flynn was the most damaged. Likely 4 years old and born in the mill. I had trained corgis for many years so I was probably his best bet. I took months to even have him comfortable at home. He didn’t know what it meant to walk on the earth; what windows were and lights that reflect in them; how to interact with other dogs. He was too scared to be aggressive in any way. I am so grateful for my Pembroke Corgi Rosie who was the leader– she taught him how to be a dog. It took several years for him to be comfortable going places and doing things with us. Once he did he was a trooper! He would hike through woods; loved meeting other dogs–especially small dogs; and he was ok with people though careful. I trained him in agility for a full summer to build his confidence. He did well on jumps and tunnels but never took a step onto the flat of the dog walk. Too scary. He traveled across the country in his crate (with Jazz my Cardigan Corgi) for over a week without complaint. He enjoyed OR (especially the coast) but didn’t like the rain. He died a natural death at about 16 years old. I adopted a Papillon puppy from OHS 5 years ago.
SQL
Born: October 9, 2025
Adopted: December 27, 2025
Passed: August 1, 2026
SQL was born with severe CH [Cerebellar Hypoplasia], and over time we learned she also had serious epilepsy and other complications. While we tried very hard to extend her life, ultimately she died of a seizure before her first birthday.
While here, SQL brought joy to everyone who met her. Her wiggly wobbly ways, meows of greeting, and attempts at biscuits made everyone love her instantly. Her loss is heartbreaking, but her legacy, and the legacy of helping disabled pets, is larger than just her.
Buttercup
Born: July 3, 2019
Adopted: October 5, 2021
Passed: May 25, 2026
The second I saw her picture, I knew she was my dog. I had just moved to NC and my new home was missing something, her. I went to the shelter in Catawba, and of all the dogs who made a ruckus when I bettered, she was just standing there, peacefully wagging her tail, like she knew she was coming home with me. I didn’t know she was the one I had come to see, but I was hoping. When they finally brought out the dog I had requested, neither her nor I could contain our excitement, because it was her. They warned me that her heart was in pretty bad shape, even only being 2.5 years old, but I was determined to give her the best life with whatever I could.
The next 5 years were filled with nothing but love and caring, and my house never felt empty with her. She was the sweetest and most gentle dog, and everyone who met her couldn’t help but fall in love with her. Meeting new people was one of her favorite things.
We spent many hours on walks, even in the snow or rain, because she was happiest when we could walk free together, because she never left my side.
In the end, her heart became overwhelmed and the hardest day of my life was giving her the final peace she deserved. I like to think she just loved everything too much, that her heart was too big for her body.
RIP Buttercup

Diablo. My Baby. My Love-Bug. My Googly Bear.
There will never be another boy quite like you.
You were the sweetest, most loving, gentle, playful, and empathetic soul. You had a way of looking into my eyes that made me feel completely known and completely safe. For more than half of my life, you were by my sideโthrough every chapter, every change, and some of the hardest moments I ever had to walk through.
You gave so much love simply by being you. You made ordinary days softer, brought comfort without ever needing to be asked, and left little pieces of your sweetness everywhere you went.
Your life was a gift, and I hope you always knew how deeply you were loved.
In your honor, Iโm making a donation to the Humane Society, in hopes that your beautiful legacy can help bring love, comfort, and a forever home to another animal in need.
I will miss you for the rest of my life, my sweet boy. Thank you for choosing me. I love you, Diablo. Always.

Snicky
Born: May 1, 2011
Adopted: August 3, 2013
Passed: August 19, 2026
When Snick and I met at OHS, he finally found his forever home. He had been brought up from California and adopted out to two other families before he came home with me.
There were challenges…I didn’t know if I had the skills to be with him through them. Snick learned to feel safe with me. We learned how to be with each other in that safety and love. When we moved in with his dad and his brother, there were more challenges. We again figured out how to help feel safe and we rested together in our love for each other.
He has forever changed me. He has taught me what true, unconditional love is. He was loyal, always genuine with his affection and feelings and looked at me with curiosity and wonder. In his later years, he lost his hearing and could find me anywhere I was in the house, to keep connected to feeling safe and loved. I can still hear his little toenails clicking on the floor.
Snick was brave, had the biggest heart, and loved all of us fiercely. He lived a full life with utmost dedication to our family. He is deeply missed, and we are glad to support OHS to connect other humans to deep love.
We love you, Snicky! ~Mama, Papa and Brother
Jackson
Adopted: June 13, 2013
Passed: July 9, 2026
On our way home from Oregon Humane Society in SW Portland, Jackson decided to give me a big thank-you kiss for adopting him while we were traveling at 60 miles per hour on Banfield. He was a Jack Russell (maybe a Parson Russell) in every aspect–hyper (even for a Jack), nosy (not just inquisitive), reckless, loud and scary-smart. He figured out how to unlatch the door of a crate not only at home but also at Pet Smart in Reston VA. And he was an escape artist–he always found a way to slip out any harness. So, among many nicknames he acquired was Poochini, Pooch Houdini, that is. He was also known as Jumping Bean, Pretty/Handsome Boy, My Little Prince, Sir Poopalot/Serial Pooper, but most of all, My Forever Puppy.
Though he had some issues with big dogs, he loved anyone and was good with children. We lived in VA for almost 8 years, and he taught the Indian kids (from India) in the neighborhood not to be scared of dogs.
He succumbed to congestive heart failure a little over 9 weeks ago. Losing him is like losing a part of me because he was always by my side, at my feet, or literally on me. I plan to disperse some of his ashes in VA, where he enjoyed long hikes and barking at deer and foxes. Miss you, My Little Prince Jackson, my forever puppy!
Chelsea
Born: April 15, 2011
Adopted: March 13, 2013
Passed: August 14, 2026
Chelsea was adopted by me through OFSA. She picked me and it was love at first sight! She was the best dog ever! I had DNA testing and she was mostly Cockapoo. She loved meeting people on our walks and had a special fondness for a few of our neighbors. She adored her veterinarian, Doctor Todd Inman, even though at the end she had lost all but 2 teeth. He loved her as well and would visit her when she was at the office for grooming with Megan. I am so grateful to the staff at Parkway (Animal Care Group of Lake Oswego). Chelsea had a wonderful life and gave me the best 13 and a half years I could ask for. She will live in my heart and I for the rest of my life.

Mr. Tyson Callaway was quite the feline. He had a mind of his own, very independent and loved to cuddle. His purr could draw a crowd and he never went a day without thanking you for taking him in to your home. Mr. Callaway was also known in certain golf circles. He had his own Non-Profit which raised over $55,000 for the Oregon Humane Society. His charity golf tournament – The Mr. Callaway Classic – was a yearly event for many pet lovers. He spent his final years patrolling his cul-de-sac commonly knows as Mr. Callaway Court.
Gizmo
Born: June 1, 2012
Adopted: August 8, 2012
Passed: May 5, 2026
Gizmo was the most wonderful kitty and we had 14 incredible years with her before she crossed the rainbow bridge. She was extremely intelligent, a super snuggler, and she loved wearing costumes! Every Halloween she got to wear an outfit, and she would meow excitedly when we brought it out. Some of her favorite costumes were pumpkin, hot dog, and taco! Now she’s our special angel baby and we miss her every day. Love you forever Gizmo!

Emma
Adopted: March 9, 2016
Passed: November 11, 2019
Emma was my neighbor’s cat, and she was a VERY stand-offish kitty. For the first several years living next to her I could not ever get her to let me pet her. The neighbors told me she was the same with them….not a people cat at all. She kept to herself.
Then, in March of 2016 my son died. Emma immediately started showing an interest in me and let me pet her, and even pick her up. I was holding her on my porch one day, and the neighbor came home and couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He told me she had never let any of them hold her…ever! From then on Emma decided I was her person. She would run and jump into my arms if I was out working in the yard. She also decided to move in with me, and from then on she officially became my kitty. The next year when the neighbors moved, they did not try to take Emma with them. They agreed Emma had officially become my kitty, and I promised them I would always take care of her needs from then on.
Emma single handedly helped me through the darkest period of my life and gave me the love I needed to keep on living. My only son was gone, but she steadfastly filled as much of that space as possible. And although she tragically suddenly died in 2019 on Veteran’s Day I honor her memory and thank her for her incredible service.

Bat started off as a Western New York cat who built his resilient attitude in the cold snowstorms of Buffalo.
He met his mom at โten livesโ shelter in 2013 and was adopted.
Batโs long black hair and white bow tie were always perfectly kept. He was a fancy guy who knew how to make us laugh.
Every time we hear a propeller plane we know itโs our Bat trying to find us and remind us itโs food time.
Love you, Bat. Cats are the best friends we could ask for.

Marty McFly
Born: March 30, 2006
Adopted: October 21, 2007
Passed: September 22, 2020
Marty was the light of our lives for thirteen amazing years. We adopted him in 2007 from the Oregon Humane Society, shortly after our wedding. We took him everywhere. He had more frequent flyer miles and hotel points than most humans. He loved the beach. He loved kayaking and riding in the bicycle basket. He loved camping and burrowing into the sleeping bag. He looked amazing in yellow, whether in his sailing life vest or his raincoat. And he put up with halloween costumes like a champ. He loved agility and positive reinforcement training and there is nothing he wouldnโt do for a treat. His zoomies were epic. We are so grateful for the OHS for the amazing care he received before he came into our lives.
Milo
Born: July 4, 2017
Adopted: August 22, 2017
Passed: April 28, 2026
Milo Loehmann was both the last true puppy my father had. Milo’s goofy, curious, and loving nature was apparent the day I first held him in my arms. Milo allowed Dad to express his life-long passion for photography, sharing laughter and love every day.
Milo adored everyone he met. He quickly became friends with our nine-year-older lab, Sam, who lost her companion earlier that year. Despite being an old grump, she fell in love with him and taught him how to be a dog โ he brought back her love of play and feel young again.
Milo moved from Oregon to Indiana with Dad and Sam for the last year of Dad’s life. He continued to provide smiles, photo ops, and nightly snuggles and warmth for Dad.
After Dad passed my partner, Bobbx, and I drove cross-country during early-pandemic to bring both Milo and Sam back to Portland. They became part of a household of now four dogs with our roommates. Milo shared his love, making more new friends.
When we lost Sam in 2023, Milo became the center of our world. He was the star at our wedding in 2025. Sadly he developed aspiration pneumonia and was hospitalized. Despite recovering the pneumonia returned multiple times. We made the heart-breaking decision to put him to rest in April at only age eight.
We love you always, buddy. Forever my baby boy.
Tucker Puppy
Born: June 2, 2012
Adopted: August 1, 2012
Passed: December 7, 2020
We got Tucker as a puppy and he quickly became the center of our household. Being new to the Portland and also Oregon, Tucker was the catalyst to get us out and explore our new surroundings as a family. He was always up for an adventure and we loved every minute of those adventures and the pictures show our kiddo, now an adult, growing up alongside him. He was incredibly smart and was able to communicate astonishingly with me especially โ his mom. He was always by my side or by his dad’s side. I felt like he was my soul mate and I felt absolutely lost for years without him. His sister, Zelda, a Golden Retriever who we rescued actually was the one who rescued us after his loss. Tucker and Zelda had a wonderful year together before we lost him to cancer and their bond was undeniable. She learned so much from him in that fairly short period of time and we can see those characteristics she learned exhibited daily. She kept us going and is a daily reminder of how special she was to him and how special she is to us. We light a Yahrzeit memorial candle for him each month as well as on his birthday and on the day we lost him which helps us to honor him on a regular basis. Our forever “Puppy” is definitely still a part of us and will always be.

Born: November 2, 2007
Adopted: July 13, 2008
Passed: September 20, 2025
I’ll always remember when I went to Oregon Humane Society in 2008 looking for a cat. She almost immediately jumped up on my lap as though I was the one. Turns out when I got her home she seemed a bit under the weather. Took her to the vet and she had the equivalent of kennel cough. Probably she wasn’t just picking me but resting due to not feeling well. lol. She recovered quickly and soon became a wonderful kitty and so much fun. She adjusted fairly well when several years later I got remarried and moved to my husband’s house. Sophie wasn’t too sure about the dog that lived there, but eventually they lived together without too much hassle. She made it to 17 1/2 years before she developed a kidney issue and the decision was made to have her cross the rainbow bridge. Miss her a bunch!
Boji Bear

This is Benton . he was my sister’s dog and he tragically passed away. He was barely 1 year old. He was the sweetest boy. I dedicate this donation to him and my sister because I know organization like this help so that things like this don’t happen. My heart breaks for my sister and my heart breaks for him and that I’ll never get to meet him in this life. But maybe in the next I’ll be able to meet him and tell him how very missed he was. I look forward to that day
Branson
Adopted: April 16, 2019
Passed: November 1, 2023
Branson found us during a really cold Cleveland winter. We saw him outside a few times and started to leave him treats and built him a shelter. We were so worried to adopt him because we had two needy cats already. But Branson was undeniable. He was the sweetest cat I have ever met.
He was playful and silly and had the sweetest little meow. When you sat down he would beeline straight to you so he could sit on your lap. He would not stop trying to lay down on you, even when you made it clear you were trying to do something else. I still remember the weight of his head on my hands. His short time in my life was a true blessing.
Duke
Born: September 15, 2011
Passed: February 2, 2026
Fourteen and a half years ago, my 13-year-old daughter brought home an 8-week-old puppy named Duke. I wasn’t thrilled, but I agreed. A month later, I was still convinced we didn’t need a dog who was already causing problems. Little did I know how wrong I was.
Duke was a Hanging Treeโand ironically, he LOVED trees! He would run up them, chew the bark, or grab a branch and literally hang from it. โGet the tree!โ was one of his favorite commands.

He was also quite the escape artist, climbing our 6-foot fence, and I joked that his arrest record was longer than most criminals. If we left him alone too long, he’d steal and hide the bread, butter dish, or even a 5-pound bag of Almond Roca!
Eventually, I brought Duke home to live with me, and from that day forward, we were a pair. For 11ยฝ years, he was my companion, my therapist, my lifesaver, and my best friend.
He was 85 pounds of the best cuddles, the sloppiest kisses, and the biggest smile. He always seemed to know when I needed him.
Friday night he started coughing, and Monday I had to make the hardest decision of my life.
I never wanted a dog, but somehow God knew I needed Duke.
My heart is broken, but I imagine him with my dad now, happily โgetting the tree.โ
Until we meet again, buddy. I love you.

Miss Beasley
Born: September 7, 2000
Adopted: September 3, 2001
Passed: September 3, 2023
My daughter and I found Miss Bea at our vet in a cage with a label, “I need a home.” Painfully thin, she had been abandoned in a house with her kittens for two weeks. The renters moved out, locked the door behind them and left Miss Bea and her kittens with no food or water. Fortunately, some kind neighbors heard her plaintive cry, got a ladder and managed to pry open a window on the second floor. They brought her and her kittens to the vet. Her kittens had all been adopted when we found Bea, but she had been waiting for a home for over a month when we saw her. They had been fattening her up, but she was still skin and bones and we were told that “they thought she would make it.” No guarantees though.
We have had the privilege of living with sweet, little Miss Bea (4.5 lbs.) for 22 years. The vet thought she was about a year when we adopted her. She certainly made it and crossed over Rainbow Bridge at 23. She and our Cairn Terrier, Timmy, were absolute best friends. He passed away more than seven years ago so has been waiting for Bea to join him for a long time. Their graves are shoulder to shoulder.
Myrtle
Adopted: July 15, 2008
Passed: June 25, 2011
Myrtle was a ten year old chihuahua mix when my husband โdiscovered โ her on the OHS website, and we quickly drove to OHS wanting to adopt her. She had recently required dental surgery to remove a number of teeth and her little tongue sometimes slipped out between her lips. While we both loved Myrtle, she clearly preferred my husband, and would jump off my lap to climb up on his. Like most chihuahuas, Myrtle had a big heart, was courageous beyond her size, and loyal and loving. When my husband grew ill from cancer, Myrtle comforted both of us. She died shortly before he did, but she was loved and pampered every day with us.

We miss you sweet boy!!

I lost my soul animal on Tuesday, August 10. Bentley Boo Jahangir was 14 years old. He was the most steady, loyal and kind animal that I could have ever imagined. Wise beyond his years always.
Boo, we will miss you every day. You stood by me in so many ups and downs, and mostly downs. You understood my anxiety, and you didnโt need words. Every day you would wait for me on the couch after a long day of caregiving, and we would sit in silence and enjoy our rest. You understood rest, and you understood play. You became such a stable part of our family that we would all have long conversations with you about your opinions, likes and dislikes. You loved a good pulled pork sandwich or a pup patty from Burgerville. You loved people, and especially a good snuggle on the couch. You knew I was your protector. You were Chloeโs protector. We always made time to โsay goodnight to Booโ before bedtime. Chloe would come to your bed and snuggle with you, asking you about your day and sharing the hard parts of theirs with you. You were a confidant with an open ear, and the most loyal friend to all of us. When we felt like no one else was there, Boo was always there. No judgement, just kindness and lots of snuggles.
I will carry you with me each day. Love, Momma
Ledi

We rescued her when she was 7 and I was 9. We clicked the second we met, and she definitely chose me, not the other way around. She was the best $50 ever spent.
She saw me through fifth grade, middle school, high school, first year of college and the first few weeks of my second year. She was my constant up until we put her down when she was 16, just a few days ago.
She was so lovable, spunky, sassy, sweet, adventurous, always down for cuddles, and was so gentle with everyone she came across.
She was careful on how she approached a deaf dog at the dog park, she let a puppy climb all over her, and when we got a kitten, she treated her like her own. She was always eager to be around kids and let them pet her. They could crawl all over her and sheโd let them, or simply move away to signal to me that she was over it. The only time she was ever aggressive was when two dogs attacked us, and it turned into a 2v1 since she wouldnโt let me interfere. And she โwonโ too.
She taught me responsibility, how to take care of an animal, what it meant to love, and ultimately my greatest heartbreak.
But it was an honor to have her for so long even though we adopted her at seven years old. She was a crucial part of our family and weโll miss her forever until we meet again.
Lewis
Born: January 1, 2009
Adopted: November 26, 2016
Passed: November 4, 2025
Once upon a time, in a quiet moment of an ordinary day, I met Lewis during s Second Chance OH intake that changed my life. Not in the grand, dramatic ways that make for stories of heroism or legend, but in the gentle, profound ways that reshape your soul. This dog, with eyes that seem to carry the wisdom of a thousand years and a tail that wags with the joy of a carefree pup, taught me things you never knew you didnโt know. Lessons in patience, in forgiveness, and in the art of living simply for the now.
I found companionship in the soft press of his warm muzzle against my hand, a reminder that love can be as simple as a shared breath, a morning walk, or a silent understanding. In his quiet presence, I learned that joy doesnโt have to be loud; it can be found in the rustle of leaves underfoot, the rhythm of paws on pavement, or the way sunlight filters through the trees, catching in the fur of my loyal friend.
Lewis showed the kind of unconditional love that comes without strings, expectations, or demands. I realized that all those busy, frantic moments spent chasing something elusive were nothing compared to the stillness of sitting side by side, hearts beating in unison, content in the sheer act of being. He was the best boy, forever loved.
Ricochet Rooster AKA Ricky Roo
Born: January 16, 2007
Adopted: February 5, 2010
Passed: May 22, 2026
We were weekly dog walkers at the shelter and had recently lost our beloved Emma Lou (the sweetest JRT ever). Ricky Roo saw us while he was visiting Oregon Humane as a second-chance transplant from Southern California, and decided to adopt us. He had arrived in Portland with the name “Joshua” (maybe because he came from the desert) and was happy to change his name, join our family, and hang with his new sister, Minnie Moo.
He was the cutest boy from the start. He groomed himself like a cat and loved his new toys, especially the stuffed animals (all named “Chuck”). He snuggled right in the bed with us and always wanted to be close. It was clear that he had abandonment issues, and we thought he might have been dropped off from a car since he had the strangest habit of sniffing tailpipes like he was trying to find his car. He loved bananas even though they gave him gas. He was happy most of the time but would turn on his growler if someone or something bothered him. He actually earned the full-on nick-name:
“Riochet Rooster Banana Head Fart Knocker Kitty Kitty Growler”
Ricky Roo was our dear old man and we loved him so deeply for the 16 years and 5 months he shared with us. He truly put a string of lights around our hearts and we miss him every day.

I adopted Miles from OHS in April 2012. He was the best cat I could ever ask for. He loved watching birds, playing with boxes, and playing with feather toys. His favorite thing was curling up on my lap. As soon as Iโd sit down heโd be there. He traveled a few times across the country with me and was a great travel companion. He moved to Michigan with me and helped me through so many things. Unfortunately, he passed in 2024 from kidney failure. I am forever grateful to OHS for bringing this wonderful cat into my life. He was my best friend and I miss him so much. Thank you for all you do for animals and the people who love them.
Walter

The moment I laid eyes on my sweet, lovable buddy at CAT Adoption I knew he was very special. Walter was happiest if he was snuggling under your chin, giving you kisses in your ear or stretching out his entire body so you would be happy to rub his belly. He was our family’s therapy cat. If you were sad he’d know to sit on your shoulder or your lap to give you comfort. And Walter had a gift to make you giggle and laugh. He was such a silly boy and didn’t have a mean bone in his body. In the summer he loved to lay in the garden in the shade under the vegetable plants. And if Walter caught a mouse he would carry it inside to the bathroom and play with it like it was his new best friend. I would end up returning so many mice to our woods. Our little buddy was always so playful and goofy. Walter was a gift and he gave us so much love. Our hearts are full. Thank you my sweet, sweet boy.

Ziggy was an amazing and unforgettable part of our family. He was a gentle giant of a cat, weighing in at around 19 pounds, very little of which was fat. He was forever a gentleman that ruled with a velvet paw, but even the German shepherds knew better than to dismiss him. Hoping that along with the idea that nothing is ever truly lost, just recycled endlessly, maybe we all eventually find our way back to the true love we find in this hard world. If so, then I will find so many that have left me with years of grief at their death, but that is the cost of being able to hold these small warm miracles that share our lives and make them more bearable by loving us back.
