Understanding Pet Behavior

Training for the Holi-daze

Brushing up on your pets training before the holiday rush can greatly affect the well-being of both people and animals during a busy season. Tanya Roberts, Oregon Humane Director of Training & Behavior, gives tips and guidance to help the holidays feel cozy and bright!

Mental Health During the Holidays

The holiday season can be one of the most stressful times of year—for both humans and their pets. Travel, visitors, disrupted routines, and extra noise can add pressure to already strained households. Taking steps to support your pet’s behavior is also a way of supporting your own mental health.

The Hidden Stress Behind Behavior Problems

Many pet owners suffer in silence when their animal’s behavior doesn’t match their expectations. A dog who barks at the door can leave owners dreading holiday guests. A cat that soils outside the litter box may leave people hesitant to host family dinners. These moments don’t just strain the human-animal bond, they also take a toll on mental health. Pets pick up on our stress, and we, in turn, feel the weight of their distress.

It’s important for owners to know: these issues are not signs of failure. They are opportunities for learning and growth, and with support, most behavior problems can be improved.

Why Training Helps

Training is often thought of as teaching “sit,” “stay,” and “come.” But effective training goes deeper and takes a holistic approach, helping pets build confidence, manage stress, and feel relaxed and secure in their environment. Creating quiet spaces for cats and dogs and sticking to consistent routines can help everyone feel calmer.

Holiday Training Tip  Cats

  • Create an enriched environment with structured playtime and safe hiding spots
  • Have a variety of litter box setups

Holiday Training Tip: Dogs

  • Practice calm greetings or how to settle when guests arrive
  • Add in the use of puzzle toys

When pets thrive, people thrive too. By addressing behavior challenges with compassion and scientifically proven positive reinforcement training, we not only improve the animal’s quality of life, but we also reduce stress and isolation for the human family. In many cases, owners discover renewed pride in their pet and a deeper appreciation for the comfort they bring during the holiday season.

Expert Guidance

With guidance, owners gain tools to understand why a behavior happens and how to respond constructively. This shift—from frustration to empathy—strengthens the relationship and restores joy in everyday life.

Our Training & Behavior team can help you incorporate training into your daily routines and find fun things to do with your pet, so the time you do spend on training is fun and fulfilling.
