Ways to Honor Your Loved One
Losing your pet can be a difficult experience for you and your family. To many, the loss is not only of a pet, but of a very close friend.
The decision for final disposition of your pet is a personal choice. The Oregon Humane Society offers several options for a final resting-place for your pet.
Please contact us at 503-416-2987 or via email to schedule an appointment, or to learn more about any of the services listed below.
Making a memorial or honorarium gift is a wonderful way to pay tribute to a special pet or person.
If you prefer not to have your pet cremated, OHS's Animal Cemetery and Mausoleum provide in-ground and above-ground placement options. You may provide a coffin, favorite blanket, or receptacle of your choice. Many people also choose to include a special toy, bowl, or photo. We require a minimum of three days to prepare for an interment, and ask that you call ahead (503-416-2987) to schedule an appointment if you wish to be present.
The Animal Cemetery has single plots for one animal or double deep plots that can accommodate two pets. Fees range from $500 to $700.
The Mausoleum also has single or double interment options. Fees start at $650.
A Cemetery or Mausoleum service includes euthanasia, plot or crypt choice, interment, flower vase, and plaque. Coffins are also available through OHS at an additional cost.
Service Hours
Euthanasia and General Cremations When it is time to have your pet euthanized, we suggest you use your regular veterinarian. However, if you do choose OHS's euthanasia service (fees vary), our licensed technicians use the same painless procedure as a veterinarian. Generally, all animals euthanized at the shelter are cremated, but we can accommodate other arrangements if notified ahead of time. We know this is a difficult time for pet lovers, and you can be assured that you and your pet will be treated with dignity and respect. Fees range from $40 to $200, depending on the animal's weight.
Private Cremations Private cremations are scheduled as soon as possible, but may take up to two weeks, depending on the number of other requests at the time. If you decide to have your pet's remains returned, we will provide an urn, but you are welcome to furnish a receptacle of your own. Fees range from $20 to $175, depending on the animal's weight.
Columbarium You may wish to have your pet's cremated remains placed in our columbarium. Columbarium spaces can accommodate up to three pets. Placement in the columbarium includes euthanasia, urn placement, plaque, and flower vase. Cremation fees are not included with this service. Fee is $300.
Available for purchase at the OHS pet supply store Sit. Stay. Good Dog!
If you move and would like to take your pet's remains out of the Animal Cemetery or Mausoleum, OHS can provide this service at an additional fee of $100. This service is limited, however, to animals buried in specially-designed receptacles that are impervious to decomposition.
The Oregon Humane Society's animal cemetery and memorial grounds offer a tranquil place for quiet reflection. You are welcome to visit any time during normal shelter operating hours.
