Pets on Vacation
School’s out! It’s summer vacation – a time to get out there and explore the countryside. So you don’t want to leave behind your four-footed friends? Here are some tips to ensure that your summer travel plans are safe and happy for all members of your family:
*Remember, safety first. Always keep your pet with you. Make sure he/she wears visible identification. Do not leave pets unattended in a parked car as summer temperatures can bring the inside of your car to 120° -- deadly for your pet. Provide plenty of water and shade. Light skinned pets may require sun block on their noses (check with your veterinarian first). Flea and tick control is a must for summer trekkers.
*Determine if your pet would really be happier with you while traveling or staying at home with friends or a professional pit sitter. Some pets are not good traveling companions and some locations are not appropriate for pets. Be sure your pet enjoys being in the car, or in a carrier, for hours on end. If not, maybe Fido’s vacation is one at a local doggie spa.
*Plan early – confirm with hotels that they do accept pets lest you be refused a room. Also, check with your airline for any specific instructions your carrier may have – many airlines limit the number of pets allowed on a flight.
*Get a check up – just like you make sure your car is in good running order before the summer road trip, take your pet to the vet to get a health certificate, up-to-date vaccinations, and any medication he/she may need. Having your pet spayed/neutered will result in a calmer traveling companion. The certificate will be useful when checking into hotels or resorts.
*Pack for your pet – leash, collar, ID tags, emergency vet numbers, carrier, water bowls, food, treats, toys, favorite blanket, and clean-up supplies should all be easily accessible. Your pet should wear a special identification tag in addition to its regular one. Write the pet's name, your name, the person to contact at the destination, their phone number, your cell number, and a destination address so that you can be reached.
