Animals Rescued from Burns Available for Adoption March 17, 2009
The first group of dogs rescued from Burns, Ore., by the Oregon Humane Society will be available for adoption to the public this Thursday, March 19 (view dogs here).
OHS rescued a total of 125 animals last week from a Burns resident who was charged with animal neglect and agreed to forfeit the dogs to avoid further charges (more details). Many of the rescued dogs were malnourished and in need of medical care for such conditions as mange, eye infections, dental problems and parasites.
The first group of approximately 25 dogs offered for adoption were spayed or neutered yesterday and today at the OHS Medical Center. Potential adopters should be aware that the Burns dogs are not housebroken and are accustomed to living outdoors.
Potential adopters will be required to complete an adoption application before having a one-on-one meet with a dog, and all adopters must complete a mandatory behavior consultation before taking a dog home. “We want people to make an educated decision and be familiar with the needs of these dogs,” said OHS Behavior Specialist Tanya Roberts.
OHS opens to the public at 10:00 am on Thursday; the adoption office closes at 8:30 pm. Additional dogs from Burns will be made available for adoption as they are spayed and neutered and complete a behavior assessment. Information about each Burns dogs will be posted on the OHS Website as it becomes available.
