OHS Rescues Rabbits from Breeder in Clatskanie
Aug. 27, 2010: Investigators from the Oregon Humane Society yesterday discovered more than 100 dead rabbits at what appeared to be commercial breeding operation in Clatskanie.
Investigators seized 33 live rabbits from the rural property and will bring the animals to the OHS shelter in Portland at about 12:30 pm today.
The animals were seized after OHS Investigators and a Columbia County Sheriff Deputy served a search warrant on the property at 78802 Rantala Road in Clatskanie. Columbia County Animal Services aided in the investigation and rescue of the live animals.
The dead animals were found concealed in bags buried under a large pile of rabbit dung. The cause of death is still under investigation.
Public's Help Sought
OHS is searching for the owner of the rabbits, whose identity is not known at this time. The animals at the property were breeds typically used for pet rabbits and for show rabbits. The public is urged to call a special Oregon Humane Society tip line if they have any information relating to the identity of the owner.
