A record 11,523 pets found homes through the Oregon Humane Society in 2011, exceeding last year's total of 11,054 adoptions. The last pet to go to a new home in 2011 was a seven-month-old brown tabby cat named Smokey.

The 11,523 animals represent the largest number of pets adopted since OHS began operating its new shelter building in 2000. The pets adopted in 2011 included 3,654 animals who came to OHS from other shelters faced with too many pets and too few adopters.

"This is a huge accomplishment for our community," said OHS Executive Director Sharon Harmon. "We took in thousands of pets from other shelters and give them a new chance at life. It's all the more impressive when you consider there's never a time limit on how long an animal stays available for adoption at OHS."

The first pet to be adopted in 2012 was long-time resident Rex, a 90 lb. Newfoundland mix who had been at OHS for nine weeks.
