Jan, 30: The Oregon Humane Society tonight received 29 animals from a former breeder in southern Oregon, including a variety of popular small breed dogs and several exotic cats. OHS plans to have the animals available for adoption to the public on Thursday.

The dogs include West Highland white terriers, miniature schnauzers, dachshunds, a French bulldog/Boston terrier mix, and others. Most of the dogs are approximately four years old (pictured is a Maltese).

In addition to the 20 dogs, OHS received nine cats, including three Abyssinians, one Bengal, and four ocicats.

Last year, this same breeder became the first in the state to voluntarily surrender dogs to comply with the new law cracking down on puppy mills and limiting breeders to 50 sexually active animals. But after surrendering more than 43 dogs to OHS in March and another 41 dogs in December, the owner now says she is no longer in business and is moving to a property that doesn’t allow pets.

The breeder relinquished her own pet dog and cat as part of the move.

“I hope all these dogs will find good homes and I am glad that OHS came here today to help start that process,” said the breeder, who did not want to be identified. The breeding facility, located in the Medford area, once housed as many as 500 dogs but was down to under 200 dogs in recent years. The breeding operation shipped puppies to buyers as far way as New York.

Each pet will be spayed or neutered and will be offered for adoption later this week. Pictures and descriptions of each animal will be posted on the OHS website at prior to adoption.
