TriMet Goes to the Dogs for Doggie Dash
April 28, 2008
TriMet is going to the dogs! Although four-legged passengers are usually off-limits on TriMet, the Portland-area transit agency is partnering with the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) to make May 10th a dog-friendly day for train riders.
The occasion? The 21st Annual Doggie Dash, which takes place Saturday, May 10th from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm at Tom McCall Waterfront Park in downtown Portland. OHS expects 3,000 people and 1,000 dogs at Portland’s largest party for pets and people. Naito Ave. will be closed to cars from 8:00 am to 10:30 am as thousands of animal lovers and their dogs run and walk a two-mile course to raise money for animals at OHS.
TriMet riders can bring their dogs to Doggie Dash on any MAX train until 2 pm on May 10th. Riders should be going to or from Doggie Dash, and should bring their official Dash registration paper to the race and their Dash “bib” on their return ride. Regular fares apply to riders, but dogs ride free!
Dog owners need to follow these rules:
- dogs must be under the owner’s control - leash or in a crate - at all times while on MAX;
- dogs must be wearing a head collar such as Gentle Leader or wear a muzzle;
- dogs need to be wearing an ID tag that includes the owner's contact information; and
- dogs and riders must use only the rear car only of a two-car train.
The MAX Light Rail stop nearest to Doggie Dash is at SW Oak and 1st street, just two blocks away from the main registration tent in Waterfront Park near the intersection of SW Start and Naito Ave.
Participants can register for Doggie Dash as early as 7:30 am the day of the event, or can register online at www.oregonhumane.org/dash. Advance registration is $20; day-of registration is $25.
