In 1921, Portland businessman and one of OHS's founders, John K. Gill, successfully sponsored legislation requiring the addition of humane education to Oregon's school curriculum (ORS 336.067(c)). The statute is heartily endorsed by Oregon's Governor, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and Portland's Mayor. The Oregon Humane Society fulfills this requirement by offering several education programs, free of charge, to schools, groups, and individuals.

We strive to instill a sense of respect, appreciation, and a responsible loving commitment to all living creatures.
