lost and found pets
If You Find a Lost Pet
If you choose to "baby-sit" the pet until its owner is found:
- File a found pet report with your local county shelter (Clackamas County Dog Control, Multnomah County Animal Services, Washington County Animal Services,
- Place a "Found Pet" ad in newspapers. Look for postings in your area.
- Put up "found pet" signs
- Check "Lost Pet" newspaper ads.
- Check out missing pet reports at veterinary clinics, animal shelters and humane organizations, and your local police department.
If you choose not to "baby-sit" the missing pet:
- Stray animals should be taken to your local county animal control agency, as that is where owners will look first. Find the animal control agency closest to you by either looking in the phone book, checking our on-line list of agencies, or visiting www.nwdogrescue.com. The Oregon Humane Society does not accept incoming stray dogs. If you find a stray dog, it must be taken to your county animal control facility.
- You can bring stray cats to the Oregon Humane Society. OHS will hold stray cats for 3 days and post a photo and description on its stray cat Web page before placing the cat up for adoption.
- Here is what you need to know about bringing an animal to OHS:
- Call (503) 285-7722, ext. 211, to make an appointment. At that time you may also receive information on the other shelters that may be able to assist as well. We will do our best to accommodate your schedule and the urgency in getting the lost/stray pet to a shelter to be reunited with his/her owner.
-
There is a requested donation fee taking leaving an animal with OHS of $45 to $100.
-
Occasionally, we will accept animals from shelters across the state, as well as dogs from a county animal control agency, if we have room in our kennels as part of our Second Chance Program. This program makes sure that every adoptable animal finds a good, permanent, loving home. This program helps save lives by finding homes for pets across the state.
