Basic Manners Dog Training Classes ( For dogs 4 months and older)
What is it? The Oregon Humane Society offers dog training classes that are fun, positive and easy to fit into your life. Our flexible class schedule enables you to go-at-your-own-pace, moving on when you are ready. Our program offers a unique alternative to traditional dog training classes that usually meet once a week for 6-8 weeks and cannot accommodate students who must miss a class. Our format offers classes throughout the week that you can attend at your convenience. Students in a given level can attend any class in their level at any time it’s offered.
Requirements: Your dog MUST meet the following requirements to participate:
1. YOUR DOG MUST BE SPAYED OR NEUTERED.
2. We require that your dog has shown NO KNOWN AGGRESSION.
3. You dog must be current on vaccinations including Da2pp, Rabies, and bordatella. (Dogs between 4 & 6 months old do not have to be vaccinated for Rabies.)
*Prerequisite: Everyone MUST first attend our free Intro to Training class before taking Basic Manners. Intro to Training is offered on the 2nd and the 4th Saturdays of the month at 2:00 pm AND also on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month at 6:30. This class is for people only, please do not bring dogs to class. You can just drop in for the intro class, no need to register. Class is located in our Ehmann Classroom. The Intro to Training Class will provide you with an overview of our training style and methods, give you realistic expectations for what you will learn in class, and you will also receive a schedule of our classes.
What will my dog and I learn in the Basic Manners Classes?
In Level 1, we will help you teach your dog basic commands like “sit”, “down”, “stay”, and the basics of loose-leash walking. We also help your dog learn to take treats nicely, how to focus on his or her owner, and how to come when called. We use real life scenarios so the skills you learn in class transfer easily to your home and life.
In Level 2, we will help you and your dog master basic commands with the added difficulty of distraction. Dogs will also learn “leave it”, “sit for guests”, and how to tolerate grooming.
To Graduate, we encourage students and their dogs to test for the Canine Good Citizen Certification after completing both levels. The CGC is a standard of behavior awarded by the American Kennel Club. If your dog passes you will receive the CGC certificate and everyone will know your dog has displayed good manners at home and in the community.
When: We offer various day and evening classes Monday through Friday. You will receive a current schedule at your Intro To Training Class.
NOTE: After purchasing a pass, you may attend as many classes as you wish until it expires. We require that students let us know if they are coming to class on the day of class.
