First Pets from Newport Pet Store Rescue Ready For Adoption
Nov. 23, 2011: The Oregon Humane Society is seeking homes this Friday, Nov. 25, for approximately 55 pets who were among the 264 animals and nearly 800 fish seized in September from a Newport retail pet store suspected of a prolonged pattern of animal neglect.
Last week ownership of the pets was relinquished to OHS, paving the way for Friday's adoption. The animals include 11 puppies, 31 birds, three chinchillas, 70 rats, four gerbils, and 114 mice.
More Than Puppies, Birds and Rodents
In September, 797 fish were also seized from Circus World Pets and are in the care of the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. Most of the 31 reptiles are being housed at the Oregon Zoo and OMSI. It is expected that the Oregon Coast Aquarium, Oregon Zoo and OMSI will keep the seized animals in their permanent care.
OHS opens at 10 am on Friday, at which time the public can see the pets available for adoption from the Newport rescue. OHS is located at 1067 NE Columbia Blvd, Portland, OR 97211.
You Can Help Combat Neglect
OHS Humane Officers are commissioned by the Governor of Oregon to investigate animal cruelty crimes anywhere in the state. Last year, more than 500 animals were seized by OHS officers or surrendered to them as a result of investigations into neglect and abuse allegations. OHS relies entirely on donations to fight animal abuse and neglect throughout Oregon. Please make an online donation today to help fight animal cruelty.
